Howard Cruttenden Marten (b. 1884), a conscientious objector and member of the No-Conscription Fellowship during the First World War, was sentenced to death, commuted to ten years, then imprisoned at Winchester and Wormwood Scrubs, and later employed on the Home Office Work Scheme at Aberdeen (Dyce), Wakefield and Dartmoor (Princetown).
